We all know the importance of keeping our bathrooms sparkling clean and hygienic, but there are some cleaning tasks that get missed.

One of these is the shower head, which can end up being neglected. While you focus on scrubbing tiles, cleaning drains and polishing glass, it’s easy to forget about the shower head itself.

However, keeping your shower head clean is crucial, as it’s exposed to everything from minerals and soap residue to skin cells and bacteria on a daily basis. Anything that builds up on or inside the shower head can make its way into the water you shower under. Along with hygiene concerns, it can also affect the performance of your shower.

Here, we’ll run through the benefits of regular cleaning, along with easy practical tips on keeping your shower head in pristine condition.

"I love the brand ethos of addressing skin and hair health with a shower filter that is both luxury and sustainable, particularly if you have a skin condition. It’s a simple thing to add to your wellness routine that can minimise the contaminants in water  – and potentially lessen  the number of shower products and moisturisers you use.”

Why Clean Your Shower Head?

There are lots of reasons to clean your shower head alongside other parts of your shower. The first and most obvious is for hygiene purposes, to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria.

It may look reasonably clean on the outside, but the inside can be a different story. This kind of warm, damp environment can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

The other benefits of cleaning your shower head include:

  • Improved water flow and pressure
  • A more enjoyable shower experience, with no weak jets or sideways sprays
  • Extending the life of the shower head, so you don’t need to replace it prematurely (which inevitably comes with a cost)
  • Reducing water waste, along with saving energy on heating water.

Why Shower Head Build-Up Matters

It isn’t just bacteria, mould and mildew that can build up in your shower head. Mineral deposits and residue can also be a problem, especially if you live in a hard water area where the tap water is typically mineral-heavy. You may already notice this kind of problem, where mineral residues leave behind a white, chalky crust on bathroom tiles or a cloudy film on the glass of your shower screen.

Both limescale and mineral deposits (such as calcium and magnesium) can clog the nozzles of your shower head. This can be compounded by other types of buildup, such as soap scum and shampoo.

All of these things can block your shower head, preventing it from working properly. If you’ve noticed an issue with water pressure recently - and haven’t cleaned or replaced your shower head - then this could be the culprit.

What To Clean Your Shower Head With

The good news is that it’s usually pretty straightforward to clean your shower head, although it can be a little trickier if it’s been a long time since it was last cleaned.

You can even use natural products you have around the house, such as white vinegar (great for dissolving mineral deposits), bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice.

You can use commercial cleaning products for really tough jobs, but use them with caution. They can be very strong, potentially causing damage to your shower head as well as being risky from a health perspective.

Here are some more tips to remember when cleaning your shower head:

  • Use soft tools - an old toothbrush is ideal for cleaning nozzles, but you will also need a cloth or sponge
  • Avoid harsh abrasives and steel wool - these can scratch the shower head
  • Be careful with chemicals, especially if you have a chrome or otherwise coated shower head where the finish could be damaged.

Many people find it effective to soak their shower head in white vinegar (in a bowl or bucket) for around 30 minutes. This dissolves the mineral buildup, and remaining deposits can be scrubbed away using an old toothbrush.

Just make sure to rinse thoroughly and run the shower for a good minute or so afterwards, to flush out any loosened grime.
